Marijuana has been part of herbal medicine for a long time. The plant has medicinal properties found in its biologically active components, also known as cannabinoids. The commonly used cannabinoids are THC and CBD.
Currently, the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) identifies marijuana as a controlled substance, which means it is illegal to possess, prescribe, or sold under federal law. However, it can be used to treat medical conditions that are legal under various state laws. West Virginia cannabis has been legalized to only utilize the plant medicinally.
One of the medical conditions that can be legally treated by medical marijuana is cancer. According to health care experts, smoked or vaporized marijuana can be used to treat nausea and vomiting that come with chemotherapy. Other studies also showed the positive effects of smoked marijuana on neuropathic pain.
The American Cancer Society also shared that recently, medical experts have found that THC and other cannabinoids, such as CBD, slowed growth and/or caused death in certain types of cancer cells growing in lab dishes. Animal studies also suggested that it prevented the formation of certain cancer cells.
Although the studies above have shown the possible benefits of cannabinoids on cancer, it is still unclear whether or not they can fully prevent cancer in humans.
To safely and legally use medical marijuana, you must first procure a medical marijuana card in West Virginia.
Healthy Living can help you get a medical cannabis card from your physician so that you can be allowed to register with the health department to use the drug. But with recent news, Virginia will no longer require medical marijuana patients to register with the state. Your physician’s written certification can allow you to immediately possess and purchase medical marijuana.
